Yann Besson, luthier Yann Besson, violin and viola maker

 

Michael is a viola and violin performer working as an orchestral chamber and solo musician. Among the orchestras he has played in are CBSO, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Philharmonic, ENB. He is also a folk musician, playing for years in Greece with prominent authentic musicians and with bands in London’s multicultural music scene.

He has appeared in venues such as Wigmore Hall, King’s Place, St.James Piccadilly, St.Martin-in-the-Fields, Bristol Beacon, Musikverein, Athens Megaron etc.
He has studied in UoM (Bmus), MDW, Royal Academy of Music (MA) with James Sleigh and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (PGAD) with Roger Chase. He has had masterclasses and lessons with Lawrence Power, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Garth Knox, Richard Ireland, Hartmut Rohde, Annette Isserlis, Tatiana Masurenko, Paul Silverthorne among others. He has been RAM, Athena Scholarship and Stavros Niarchos Foundation scholar.

He is co-founder of Diphonon Duo along with the accordionist Iñigo Mikeleiz. They are Live Music Now musicians and have been fellows of Wigmore Hall Learning Department taking part extensively in community music projects since. Numerous composers have written pieces for them. Recently they released their first CD with title “Emerging Voices” which includes new music written for viola and accordion.

He is teaching violin/viola/ensembles in Saffron CYM and during the recent years he has taught chamber music in the chamber music courses of ProCorda.
He plays a 2016 viola made by Yann Besson.
